Podiyari Upmavu – Broken Rice & Wheat Rava Upma

Broken rice (podiyari) and wheat rava make a heartier, more filling upma – a traditional way to use up broken grains.

  • Stir often once the rava goes in to stop it catching.
  • Add a little more hot water if it looks dry.

Podiyari Upmavu (Broken Rice & Wheat Rava Upma)

Podiyari upmavu – a wholesome upma of broken rice and wheat rava, tempered with mustard, urad dal and chillies and finished with coconut, cashews and raisins.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup broken rice
  • 1 cup wheat rava
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp green chilli chopped
  • 1/2 tsp ginger chopped
  • 6 curry leaves
  • 4 dried red chillies broken
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 cups grated coconut
  • cashew nuts and raisins to garnish
  • salt to taste

Method
 

  1. Heat the oil in a kadai and add the mustard seeds.
  2. Add the urad dal, green chilli, ginger, red chillies and curry leaves.
  3. Pour in 4 cups of water with salt and bring to the boil.
  4. Add the broken rice and wheat rava and cook well.
  5. Garnish with coconut, cashew nuts and raisins.
